BIBLE
Our Bible series is Voyages by Concordia Publishing. Bible stories are taught weekly and memory verses memorized weekly. Weekly Chapel is Wednesday at 8:40 a.m. Please join us if you can.
MATH
Math goals for the year include counting to 100 by 1, 2, 5, and 10 (oral and written), understanding addition and subtraction facts to 20, (1 and 2 digit) with the introduction of carrying and borrowing, telling time to the hour and half hour, using a ruler, and geometry. We have adopted the Scott Foresman California Math series. We will also be using MathFacts in a flash. This is a web based computer program which provides practice and assessment of 62 categories of math facts.
SOCIAL SCIENCE
In Social Science, first graders learn about reading and making maps, where our food comes from and studies about their world beginning with families and friends, neighborhoods, cities, states, countries and the world. We use Houghton Mifflin.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Our reading program is also from Houghton Mifflin. The goal is for first grade students to be able to read and write stories, poems, and nonfiction. We work on phonics throughout the year, including the use of a Christian phonics program called Victory Drill. English and spelling skills are taught in conjunction with reading. We write both as a class and individually.
HANDWRITING
Students in first grade work on manuscript handwriting, using a text called A Reason for Handwriting.
COMMUNICATION
Every Friday your student will bring home an envelope filled with work for that week. Also, there will be a letter from me, which gives you the highlights of the week and any personal notes from me to you about behavior, progress, or anything else I need to talk to you about. The Friday Folder is a vital link in the school-home communication. It is a very important part of our communication with each other, but by no means is it the only link. Any time you have concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to write me a note or call.
HOMEWORK
Homework consists of memorizing a Bible verse and reading and practicing Victory Drill nightly and weekly homework packets.
DISCIPLINE
In order to develop trust and respect in the classroom, I try to be a fair and consistent teacher. I use a positive behavior plan that encourages each and every child in the classroom to be successful. This is how it works:
Each child will have a card with his/her name on it. If a child is talking, out of order, disrespectful, tardy or not ready with materials, a colored warning slip will be given, depending on the category. Consequences vary depending on the amount of slips issued in a day. Purple slips are awarded for exemplary behavior.
First Grade Teacher
This is my fifth year as the first grade teacher here at St. Peter’s. I have been married to my husband Steve for 26 years. We have 4 sons. David attends Cosumnes River College. Matthew is a sophomore at Sheldon High School, and twins Andrew and Zachary are in 8th grade this year and attend St. Peter’s. We worship at Southside Community Church.
My teaching assistant Mrs. Baldwin and I are looking forward to giving your child a wonderful year full of love, laughter and learning. It is our desire to provide a stimulating, enriched Christ centered environment that will foster a love of learning.
If you ever have questions or concerns you can reach me at ccaudle@splseagles.org or 689-3050.
Yours in Christ,
