Fourth Grade Curriculum

BIBLE
Our Bible series is Voyages by Concordia Publishing. Bible stories are taught weekly and memory verses are memorized weekly. Weekly Chapel is Wednesday at 8:40 a.m. Please join us if you can.

MATH
We use Scott Foresman California Math. There is a strong emphasis on multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and pre-algebra. Speed drills will be given during math to sharpen basic math skills. We will also be using MathFacts in a Flash. This is a web based computer program which provides practice and assessment of 62 categories of math facts.

SOCIAL STUDIES
The text we will be using is the Houghton Mifflin, California series. We include many field trip opportunities to enrich the students’ knowledge of Calfornia history.

LANGUAGE ARTS
In accordance with the state’s new Language Arts standards, we are using Houghton Mifflins Reading California. It is an integrated, phonics based approach to reading, organized in thematic cluster, encompassing spelling, English, writer’s workshop and handwriting. We follow the basal readers closely. Children are assigned monthly book reports. Different styles of writing are taught and practiced and basic grammar is taught. Spelling lessons closely follow along with the current story being read. Students are required to write cursive for all homework assignments, research papers, tests and quizzes. We work on improving their cursive skills.

HOMEWORK
Each student is to have an assignment book. At the end of each day, students will update their assignment book by listing all work for that day. This book is a good tool for keeping parents informed of the activities in the classroom and must be signed by them nightly. Along with the assignment book, your child is expected to maintain a notebook. All work that has been graded and returned will be kept in the binder in the proper sections. Homework will consist of finishing assignments given in class and other designated homework projects. This includes book reports and research papers that will be assigned throughout the year.

COMMUNICATION
A weekly newsletter will be given out to your student every Friday. This has important information concerning events going on at the school, upcoming activities in the classroom, and a synopsis of the events of this past week.

DISCIPLINE
On the wall in the class is a discipline chart that is color-coded. A student is asked to pull a marker and place it in his/her pocket if they have infringed upon a school rule.

FOURTH GRADE TEACHER
Hello, and welcome to St. Peter’s Lutheran School. My name is Doris Dahle and my husband Dan and I have lived in Elk Grove for a number of years. We are active members at Sun Grove Community Church. We have a daughter named Emily who is a graduate of St. Peter’s. I first came to know St. Peter’s Lutheran School through the eyes of my daughter. She was so excited to come to school, she loved her teachers, she was happy and content, and her love for the Lord was and still is growing strong. I thank God every day for the opportunity that He has given us in allowing her to attend school here.

I have been in the field of education for over twenty years. My first degree is in Early Childhood Development and I spent many wonderful years with the little ones. As time went on, I returned to college and received a teaching credential in multiple subjects and I am delighted to be at St. Peter’s teaching upper elementary.

God has blessed me in so many ways throughout my life. My main goal for my students is to see Christ living in me and for each of us to grow in His light and love. I want my students to be prepared to walk with the Lord. In order to do this, my students will need to learn self-discipline, be accountable, strive to do their best and be prepared for class.

I hope, as you tour the campus, that you see God’s blessings. We are truly blessed indeed! I will be praying for you and God’s leading you in the direction that He wants you to go.

Sincerely,
Doris Dahle
