Top of Form NEWS FROM EIGHTH GRADE FEBRUARY10, 2012 |

ACADEMIC UPDATE
BIBLE: Students continue working with a partner to develop a series of Lenten devotions. We plan to post these devotions on the school site during Lent.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Essays that entertain and essays that relate to specific content areas will be read. Students should be at 85% of their AR goal at this time. Each student knows their test average and percentage of goal. Please ask! Also, speech meet preparations continue. Daily practice at home is required. Most have memorizing under way and need to focus on presentation.
HISTORY: Trails west and European immigrants in the mid 1850s will discussed in class.
LATIN: Latin is up and running. Students are expected to have 6 tests done by Tuesday, 2/14.
MATH: Algebra will begin Chapter 7 on Exponents. Wednesday, they will need to bring their scissors and glue to class, in order to create a map of the universe using scientific notation and multiplication properties of exponents.
I will be sending home a Math Facts Progress Report for each student. The goal is for a student to complete 20 levels of Math Flash each trimester. Please sign and return the form on Monday.
SCIENCE: In science we will be studying how energy is released in chemical reactions and learning how to clean jewelry.

ACADEMIC UPDATE
BIBLE: Students will be working with a partner to develop a series of Lenten devotions.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students will be reading biographies in class. Speech meet preparations continues. Please be sure to listen to your student’s selection every evening. Students need to have 25 lines prepared by Thursday, 2/9.
HISTORY: Students have been given a take-home test covering the first three administrations, the Louisiana purchase, and the Lewis and Clark expedition. This test is due on Tuesday, 2/7.
LATIN: There is no Latin assigned this week. Latin time slots will be used for speech meet preparation.
MATH: Chapter 6 exam on Thursday.

In preparation for Family Appreciation Chapel on Wednesday, 2/15, we are asking each student to bring a copy of a family picture, a family Bible verse, and an interview with a family member. Please send these items in by Friday, 2/10. A very special project is planned!

ACADEMIC UPDATE
BIBLE: Lesson 12 will be a study of loving all people. The memory verse is Galatians 5:22. There will be a test on this verse on Friday, 2/3. Students will be expected to write the verse and apply it to specific events in their lives.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Sonnets will be completed in class on Monday. The final copy will be due on Friday, 2/3. Students have selected their speeches for speech meet and are required to know the first 10 lines by Friday, 2/3. Grammar will be a series of activities done in class to apply the rules of capitalization and punctuation.
HISTORY: The War of 1812 and the rise of sectionalism and nationalism will be studied. Students will complete a take-home test covering the first three administrations, the Louisiana purchase, and the Lewis and Clark expedition. This test will come home on Wednesday, 2/1 and is due on Tuesday, 2/7.
LATIN: There is no Latin assigned this week. Latin time slots will be used for speech meet preparation.
MATH: Algebra will be studying systems of linear inequalities. They will need colored pencils all next week.
SCIENCE:
We will be wrapping up chapter 7, our study of the periodic table. Jeopardy will be on Thursday and the test will be on Friday. There will be an after school study session on Thursday for all interested students from 3:15 to 3:45.

NEWS FROM EIGHTH GRADE
JANUARY 20, 2012 |

| ACADEMIC UPDATE
Bible: Students will complete Lessons 10 and 11. The test on this material will be given on Friday, 1/27. Don’t forget our Chapel program is this Wednesday. Your sons and daughters have created an original skit and prepared some inspiring music. Please plan to join us for worship at 8:40 followed by refreshments in Room 12.
Language Art: Students will be writing their own sonnets in the style of Shakespeare. Their Latin homework will be based on the plays read in class. Also, students must have their piece for Speech Meet selected and approved by Friday, 1/27. The in-school meet will be held on Friday, 2/24 with the ACSI meet to follow at the end of March
History Group presentations on the administrations of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson will be given in class on Monday. We will then take a look at the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Math: Algebra begins Chapter 6, solving functions through graphing.
Latin: Six tests should be completed at this time. There is Latin homework due Thursday, 1/26. Students will be translating and illustrating a quote from the play read in class.
Science: Next week 8th grade will begin work on their Atom’s Family Scrap Books. If you have any scrapping material you would be willing to share with the class, please bring it in on Tuesday. PLEASE NOTE… If you have not received your Sycamore password and direction sheet you may request it in the school office.
Current class grades are updated every Tuesday by 4 p.m. These grades can be found online in Sycamore using your username and password. HAPPENINGS IN ROOM 12
JANUARY 13, 2012
ACADEMIC UPDATE
BIBLE: Students have completed Lesson 9 in Wise Up. Our study of friendship continues as we cover Lessons 10 and 11, choosing and keeping good friends.
LANGUAGE ARTS: As we conclude the reading of Shakespeare’s plays, students are working with a partner to create a movie poster and review related to the play they selected.
HISTORY 8:With the Constitution written, students will work in groups to study the administrations of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson. Also, students will take a look at the primary process.
LATIN: 5 tests should be completed at this time. I will provide extra time for basketball players if they miss class due to away games. There is no Latin homework next week. The lab is open on Tuesday and Thursday.
SCIENCE: Students will be covering all things about the Periodic Table of Elements including how it is organized, how they are named, and radioactivity.
MATH: Algebra students will build their skate board ramps in order to apply their knowledge of Slope. A rubric went home last week and can also be found on Mrs. Stewart’s Algebra page in Sycamore.
PLEASE NOTE:
**** 7th grade is collecting baby wipes to donate to Loaves and Fishes. We are asking each middle school family to donate one package of baby wipes by January 31st. Thank you.

2012 is off to a great start in Room 12. Happy New Year to each of you.
ACADEMIC UPDATE
BIBLE: Students have studied the meaning of Epiphany. They are beginning to work on their Chapel program which will be presented on Wednesday, 1/25. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us. Students will complete Lesson 9 and continue to work with 1 John 2:3-8. The test on Friday, 1/13, will cover only Lesson 9.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students will be reading some of the works of Shakespeare. We begin with plays and conclude with writing sonnets.
HISTORY 8: A series of centers will focus on the Constitution of the United States. Students have determined the requirements and will complete the work next week in class.
LATIN: 5 tests should be completed at this time. I will provide extra time for basketball players if they miss class due to away games. The lab is open on Tuesday and Thursday.
SCIENCE: Eighth grade will be wrapping up its study of the States of Matter. The test will be on Wednesday, and then we are off to the Periodic Table.
MATH: There will be no after school math help on Wednesday, 1/11. Chapter 5 test will be Friday. This will be an open-note test.

NEWS FROM 8TH GRADE
December 9, 2011
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: Our final Advent drama will be presented during the Carol sing on 12/16. We will continue our study of Jesus, the Light of the world.
LANGUAGE ARTS: The poetry unit concludes. We will finish reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and watch the movie based on the book.
HISTORY: Our study of The American Revolution concludes. Students will complete an assessment of the material covered when they return on 1/3/12. It will be open note. Notes will be organized in class before the Christmas break.
LATIN: Students should have 3 tests done at this point. There is no homework assigned.
SCIENCE: 8th grade will be testing on how compounds and solids are formed on Thursday, 12/15.

CALENDAR UPDATE:

NEWS FROM 8TH GRADE
December 2, 2011
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: Advent activities continues. Students are working in groups to present Advent dramas in Chapel. One group presents on 12/7 and one group presents on 12/16. Check with your son or daughter as to when they are performing.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students are exploring poetry using a variety of selections from the textbook.
HISTORY: Students have completed a timeline of events leading to the American Revolution. After looking at the Declaration of Independence students will study the causes, events, and outcome of the American Revolution.
LATIN: Students should have 2 tests done at this point. There is homework which will be assigned on Monday, 12/5 and will be due on Wednesday, 12/7.
MATH: Algebra will begin Chapter 5, Slope Intercepts.
SCIENCE: Students will begin chapter 5, Combining Atoms and Molecules.

NOVEMBER 17, 2011
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: .The test on Lesson 7 and 1John 2:5-6 will be given on Tuesday, 11/22.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students reviewed fragments and run-on sentences. A persuasive essay will be written in class. Students have a new ZPD and goal for the second trimester. Information is attached.
HISTORY: Chapter 5 continues. The Chapter 5 test will be given on Tuesday, 11/22,
LATIN: We begin anew in Latin. Students are expected to complete 10 tests before the end of February. There is no Latin homework.
MATH: Algebra begins a study of Chapter 4, Functions and Domains.
SCIENCE: We will be discovering all the different parts of the atom.

Report cards will be mailed home on Wednesday, 11/23. They do not need to be returned, this is your copy. If you have a question please contact your child’s teacher.
