NEWS FROM 8TH GRADE
December 9, 2011
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: Our final Advent drama will be presented during the Carol sing on 12/16. We will continue our study of Jesus, the Light of the world.
LANGUAGE ARTS: The poetry unit concludes. We will finish reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and watch the movie based on the book.
HISTORY: Our study of The American Revolution concludes. Students will complete an assessment of the material covered when they return on 1/3/12. It will be open note. Notes will be organized in class before the Christmas break.
LATIN: Students should have 3 tests done at this point. There is no homework assigned.
SCIENCE: 8th grade will be testing on how compounds and solids are formed on Thursday, 12/15.
Please note…The testing schedule for Christian Brothers, Cristo Rey, Jesuit, and St. Francis is on the back of this note.
CALENDAR UPDATE:
12/15 Cookie decorating and sock exchange with our buddies. Please send wrapped socks to school by Tuesday, 12/13. Thank you
12/16 We will be enjoying a Carol sing, watching Elf (permission slip attached), and snacking on a variety of goodies. Thanks for your help in providing food.

December 2, 2011
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: Advent activities continues. Students are working in groups to present Advent dramas in Chapel. One group presents on 12/7 and one group presents on 12/16. Check with your son or daughter as to when they are performing.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students are exploring poetry using a variety of selections from the textbook.
HISTORY: Students have completed a timeline of events leading to the American Revolution. After looking at the Declaration of Independence students will study the causes, events, and outcome of the American Revolution.
LATIN: Students should have 2 tests done at this point. There is homework which will be assigned on Monday, 12/5 and will be due on Wednesday, 12/7.
MATH: Algebra will begin Chapter 5, Slope Intercepts.
SCIENCE: Students will begin chapter 5, Combining Atoms and Molecules.

NOVEMBER 17, 2011
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: .The test on Lesson 7 and 1John 2:5-6 will be given on Tuesday, 11/22.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students reviewed fragments and run-on sentences. A persuasive essay will be written in class. Students have a new ZPD and goal for the second trimester. Information is attached.
HISTORY: Chapter 5 continues. The Chapter 5 test will be given on Tuesday, 11/22,
LATIN: We begin anew in Latin. Students are expected to complete 10 tests before the end of February. There is no Latin homework.
MATH: Algebra begins a study of Chapter 4, Functions and Domains.
SCIENCE: We will be discovering all the different parts of the atom.

Report cards will be mailed home on Wednesday, 11/23. They do not need to be returned, this is your copy. If you have a question please contact your child’s teacher.

BIBLE: Our study of our school theme continues with a look at foundations.

MATH: The algebra exam covering Chapter 3 will be given on Thursday, 11/10.
SCIENCE: The Chapter 3 test will be on Wednesday, 11/9. Monday will be review, and Tuesday will be Jeopardy. There will be a study hall after school on Tuesday from 3:10 to 3:40.

The Crocker Art Ark will be at St. Peter’s the week of Nov. 7-11th. Families and students are invited to tour the Ark on Wednesday, Nov. 9th, 3:15-4:45. It will be located in the small parking lot by the school entrance. Students will also be going to the ark during the week.

ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: Lesson 6 begins on Monday. The students will begin a new passage of memory verses beginning with 1John 2:3-4. A test on this material will be given on Friday, 11/4.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students will explore art and architecture in preparation for their visit to the Crocker Art Ark. Students are also working on “a case” to present in a mock trial.
HISTORY: Life in colonial America is being studied in group format with each group choosing how to present their information. Each group needs to provide their own materials and all materials need to be here on Monday, 10/31.
LATIN: Students should have 6 tests done at this point. There is no Latin homework next week. Remember that the lab is open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
MATH: Algebra will continue on in chapter 3, inequalities. On Tuesday, we will explore geometric shapes and the concepts of volume, perimeter, and area in order to prepare for our Art Ark visit.

NEWS FROM 8TH GRADE
October 21, 2011
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: Lesson 5 begins on Monday. This lesson will help students realize the Biblical mandate to honor our parents. The memory verses are Proverbs 1:15-16 which brings us to the end of the passage we have been studying since September. The test will be on Friday, 10/28.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students continue working in literature circles as they read The Witch of Blackbird Pond. We will complete this book next week. The final draft of the biographical sketch is due on Tuesday, 10/24. This will count as an assessment grade in both English and history.
HISTORY: We conclude our settlement study with a look at the middle and southern colonies.
LATIN: Students should have 5 tests done at this point. There is Latin homework next week. Remember that the lab is open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
MATH: Next week, students will explore inequalities. On Friday, they will have the opportunity to play an on-line inequality game. Yeah math!

NEWS FROM 8TH GRADE
October 14, 2011
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: Our study of the school theme continues as we focus on the light of Christ even in difficult times. The memory verse is Psalm 27:1 and the test will be given on Friday, 10/21.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students are working in literature circles as they read The Witch of Blackbird Pond. A test on parts of speech will be given on Thursday, 10/20. Students will also be working on writing their address and the school address correctly.
HISTORY: Students will develop a timeline that shows settlement of the thirteen original colonies. Students have selected a person of interest from the colonial settlement period and are writing a one page report on relative contributions. The rough draft is due Wednesday, 10/19, and the final copy will be due on Tuesday, 10/25. This will be a history and English assessment grade.
LATIN: Students should have 4 tests done at this point. There is no Latin homework next week. Remember that the lab is open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
MATH: Chapter 2 exam on Friday, October 21st. There is no after-school help available on Wednesday, 10/19.
SCIENCE: We will be wrapping up chapter 2 by examining the relationship between force and velocity. The exam will be on Thursday, with a study hall after school on Wednesday.

SEPTEMBER 30, 2011
ACADEMIC UPDATE:
BIBLE: Lesson 3 will be done in class and as homework. The memory verses are Proverbs 1:10-11. This is a continuation of the memory work begun last week. The test on this material will be given on Tuesday, 10/4.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students are working independently to read 6 short stories and complete 10 in class activities related to the stories. The final 5 assignments are due on Wednesday, 10/4. We will begin a novel in class on Monday, 10/10.
HISTORY: Students will complete a review packet covering Chapter 2 on Monday, 10/3, in class. The test on this material will be given on Tuesday, 10/4. Students may use their notes during the test.
LATIN: Students should have 3 tests done at this point. There is no Latin homework next week. Remember that the lab is open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Also, I will make additional time available for volleyball players if they see me to schedule a convenient time.
MATH: There will be no after school help on 10/4 and 10/5 due to Mrs. Stewart’s absence.
SCIENCE: 8th grade will be about different forces and how forces combine and interact with each other and objects.
