Class News
We will resume Victory Drill this week. Please be ready to test on Victory Drill Tuesday morning. We will test for Math Facts in a Flash on Friday. Please practice at home.
1st Grade Field Trip Thursday, May 8th is our field trip to the Galt Herald Newspaper. We still need more drivers. We will be leaving at 9:30 and returning at 11:45. Please wear your blue St. Peter’s t-shirt as is required for all field trips.
All School Field Trip - Mark your calendar!
We will be going on an all school field trip May 25th to – A Magical Place in Galt..
At 11:40 leave for A Magical Place and return to school at.2:15. I will send permission slips home soon.
First Grade Chapel Program
The First Grade Chapel Program is on May 16th at 8:30. Please plan on joining us. We will have special treats following our program. It’s a fun day filled with worship, fellowship and community service.
1st Grade mission project
Please start collectingfrom family and friends new plain, white socks for our mission project. Ankle to mid-calf length preferred. We will be collecting them from the entire school and then sort them for the clothes closet after our chapel program on May 16th. You can start bringing them to school on May 14th. Our plan is to sort, label and put the donated socks into bags by type and size. I then need a volunteer to take the socks to the Food Bank/Clothes Closet on Dino Drive in Elk Grove. Please let me know if you would like to help out.
Track and Field
I will be coaching Track and Field again this year. A flyer is included in your Friday folder with the practice schedule. We will begin next Tuesday and have practice every Tuesday and Thursday to May 17th. There is a parent meeting on Tuesday, May 1st at 4:30, out near the track. No worries if you can’t make the meeting. I’ll give you the scoop! The big conference meet is on Saturday, May 19th at Sheldon High School. It is a fun filled morning and everyone gets a ribbon for every event.
Science News with Mrs. Rowley
We used our first simple machine this week (the wheel). The whole purpose of simple machines is to make work easier. Students explored this concept on their own. To encourage exploration, look around your home and neighborhood for wheels and gears.

Speech Meet
Please continue practicing your speech meet selection at home. Our classroom speech meet is Tuesday, March 27. Sorry, no parents can attend. It’s for the students and judges. Please practice having your child introduce themselves and state what they are going to recite. If your child is reciting a scripture they must also state the version of the Bible and what the scripture means to them. Thanks for all your hard work in helping your child memorize their selection!
Science notes from Mrs. Rowley
We learned Newton’s First Law (inertia). To enhance their understanding, ask your student to show you the hand motions as they recite the Law. If they need help, just give them the first 3 words and it should spark their memory (An object in motion…) FYI: An object in motion stays in motion until a force stops it; an object at rest stays at rest until a force moves it.

Please review the school dress code now that the season is changing. Please watch for correct neck lines, no sleeveless shirts or dresses and No decorative stitching on pants. Please do not send your child to school with holes or fraying in pants. Thanks!
Speech Meet
Please continue practicing your speech meet selection at home. Remember to have your child introduce themselves. My name is ________. I will be reciting ______________ by __________. Bible verses need to be recited with an explanation of what the verse means to them. Our school speech meet is on Tuesday, March, 27. We will skip Victory Drill and practice speeches the week prior to the speech meet.
We will be celebrating reading next week at St. Peter’s! Tuesday is character day. This means that your child will be dressing up as their favorite book character. They will bring a bag with 1-3 items that go along with their character. These “mystery” items will be revealed and shared during a small group discussion. Please, note they are not to bring toy guns or swords to school. They may draw them and place them in their bag.
We have a lot of fun things planned this week!
Monday: 10:15 Readers’ Week kickoff in the Fellowship Hall. Author Shirley Parenteau visits!
Tuesday: 8:40-9:15 Character Day in the Fellowship Hall
Wednesday: Buddy read together day.
Thursday: Bring your pillow, and a good book to read to the Fellowship Hall at 2:30

We have finished our electricity unit and moving on to Simple Machines. Over the next few weeks, I will be asking you to help your students find some of these machines around your home and neighborhood (for example: ramps are found at a playground in various forms). Our magnet/electricity booklets will be going home Tuesday. In it you will find background information, what your child has been working on in class, and some enrichment things you can do at home.

News Letter First Grade News February 24, 2012

ASCI Speech Meet
Please look through the selections and help your child make a selection choice. Your child will recite only one selection from Bible, Poetry or the Book of Virtues. (I have a copy in my room if you would like to take a look at it) We will have our school speech meet on Tuesday March, 27nd. The chosen representative ( first place from each category) will attend the ASCI meet, which will take place in May.
Classroom Participation is required.
You will need to practice at home but we will also be working on it in class. Please make two choices so we will not have every child reciting “little turtle”. We will let you know which one is chosen. Please let me know your selections by signing below and returning by Monday, February 26h. Choice 1 is first come first served. Only two children may do the same speech. If you do not send in a speech choice, we will be glad to help your child pick one.
The Theme 7 test took a bit longer to complete so we did not begin Theme 8. We will have the same spelling and high frequency words as last week.
Science Notes We prolonged experimenting with conductors and insulators since they were so engaged. Next week we will work together to build series and parallel circuits.

This morning we had a wonderful time at our Pancake party. Our story this week was
“If You Give a Pig a Pancake.” Good thing everybody didn’t want a bath, a rubber ducky and a tree house to go with them. Whew!

News letter First Grade News February 10, 2012

Our 100th day of school was a lot of fun. We had a special assembly that brought the entire school into the fellowship hall. Everyone got to see our 100 day projects. Such a variety! Good job! Thank you all for working so hard at putting your projects together. We even got to spend time with our 7th grade buddies. They wrote a 100 word story about their 1st grade buddy. Wow! Thanks to all the parents who made it such a success
Our Anthology story this week is “If you Give a Pig a Pancake” We will be having a pancake breakfast with butter and syrup on Friday. If you would like to come in to cook pancakes for us please let me know. We would love for you to join us!
Science Notes for Mrs. Rowley
We actually spent an extra day on static electricity because the students were so interested. Get some balloons and straws and ask them to recreate and expand on the experiments we did. Next week we will begin our current electricity coverage.
Family Appreciation Chapel
Please plan on joining us for Family Appreciation Chapel on February 15, 2012. This is a special morning filled with worship, and fellowship. Each child will make a scrapbook page about their family. This book will be bound and put in the library. Please bring a picture of you family so your child can use it for their page. If you know you will be unable to attend please send a picture of you family for your child to use and another parent can assist your child in the making of your page. Thanks!
Math Facts in a Flash
Please make sure to practice Math Facts in a Flash sometime this weekend. We will be in the Computer lab on Monday to test. Your child should be on Level 9 by the end of the 2nd Trimester. By the end of 1st grade we should be on level 19. Our 7th grade buddy class has begun working with us on our math facts. On Wednesday afternoons we get together for flashcards and fun. Every time you practice at home you are getting your child further down the road of success.

Save those soda tabs!: The fifth graders are collecting soda tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. They recycle these and use the money earned for the children that they treat. Last year they were able to earn $15,000 due to all the people who gave them the soda tabs! Pretty cool! So, bring them on in to your classroom. Just put them in the special container that we have brought to your classroom. Thank you!
