Holy Week Each year, our school celebrates Holy Week with our students. We explain what the Bible tells us about Jesus’ last week. We begin the week with a palm procession and end at the flag pole, singing “Hosanna”. We see the movie, “The Three Trees” which talks about the manger where Jesus was placed as a baby, the ship that Jesus was in while he calmed the storm, and the cross that he was crucified on. We have a Sedar meal, explaining the purpose for each food during the Last Supper, we have quiet prayer time to represent Jesus in the garden of Gethsemene, and finally, we have a cross activity for the whole school and end our week with a Good Friday chapel service. This was a very important week in Jesus’ life and in ours. Your children should be able to share some of these activities with you.
NEW FRIDAY NOTE PROCEDURE: Beginning today, we will no longer be sending home a paper Friday note. You will need a password to get to the Sycamore sight. If you missed the workshop, you will need to go to the office to get your password and can assist you with your questions regarding Sycamore. As your children grow and go on to other classes, their grades and other important information will be found on Sycamore. Parent hour forms are only on Sycamore at this time. Make sure you are able to navigate the site and ask questions if you need help.
Activities in the Duck classroom We studied dinosaurs and made fossils and a Dino puppet. We worked with number and letters and continue to practice writing our names. You can help your child practice their name at home by either writing their name in little dots and having them write over them or use a highlighter and have them write over it. You can also have them try to copy words from a book. Make sure they use an upper case letter for the first letter in their name and a lower case number for the rest. Snack Providing snack is a great way to earn parent hours. Every hour you spend and every $10 you spend count towards your parent hours. You may sign up on our snack calendar with your name and the two items you will be bringing, or you can drop off snack items any day and we will prepare them for the children. There is a snack suggestion list in the back of the Preschool Handbook. I will put a few of the lists on the counter if you would like one. When providing snack, we ask for two items and enough to feed about 40 children. Warm items like macaroni and cheese in a crockpot are favorites with the children. Please ask us if you have any questions.
Clothing Please remember to send heavy, thick, winter coats, hats and mittens with your child. Our recesses last about 25 minutes and if it is not raining, we try to go outside and run. This is a long time for children who only have a sweatshirt with them. If your child needed to borrow clothes from our preschool, please wash them and return them. They would have an “ECC” written on them. We are missing several pair of khaki pants and a few sweatshirts, socks and underwear. ions or concerns? Contact Miss Yaw or Mrs. Puccinelli @

Activities We had a few visitors in our classroom this week. On Monday, we were visited by a baby goat. He was only 10 days old and spent about 45 minutes playing our playground with us. He was extremely gentle and loved being petted. We were also given several tadpoles that we are keeping our eyes on daily. They are growning bigger and will eventually turn into frogs! Last week was reader’s week and we enjoyed our visiting authors and readers. Our buddies came in to read a story to us. They are writing a story about us and read what they have completed so far. In science, we mixed vinegar and baking soda to create a volcano. It was wild! It grew and ran over the edge of the container.

Family Scrapbook Our scrapbook is on our sign in counter. Please take a look at it when you have a moment. The children love to flip through the pages and see all of their friend’s families. The teachers have been reading the family verses and other things that are written on the pages. Thank you for assisting in this project and sharing your family with us. If you have not completed your page, there is still time. Please ask for supplies and we will send them home with you. If you would like to share your occupation with our class, please ask Mrs. Rowland or Mrs. Puccinelli and we can schedule a convienient time and incorporate your occupation into our lesson plans.

Activities Last week was a very busy week. We spent time learning about medical careers, exploring what nurses, doctors, dentists, veteranarians and other medical personnel do. We spent some of the week celebrating Valentines Day with a small classroom party, sharing valentines with our friends and with a buddy party, sharing a morning with our fifth grade buddies. On Wednesday, we shared a special day with our families, attending Chapel and spending time in our classroom, creating a scrapbook page about our family. If you did not get to participate on Wednesday, we would still like you to decorate a page for our Early Childhood Center Family Album. Please ask one of the teachers for supplies.
Community Helpers Month We have had several parents and grandparents share about their occupations this month. Last week, Martin’s mother, Dr. Po talked to us about being a Dentist. She showed us how to brush our teeth and about the importance of eating good food. She brought everyone a new toothbrush and some coloring pages. The children were very attentive. Ask them about her presentation. If you would like to share your occupation with our class, please ask Miss Yaw or Mrs. Puccinelli and we can schedule a convienient time and incorporate your occupation into our lesson plans.

Activities This week, the Ducks learned about nutrition. Mrs. Houser came and explained what nurses do and helped us learn about healthy food for our bodies. She even provided a wonderful and healthy snack. The children were given plastic gloves and masks that are used in the hospital and doctor’s offices. She donated a medical kit for our dramatic play area.
During our science experiment, we talked about negative pressure and watched an egg get sucked into at bottle. We will continue to create an experiment every Wednesday, right after chapel.
Valentine’s Day – Bring 24 for students and 6 for teachers. We will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Monday, February 13th. Please have your child attempt to write their own name on each Valentine, but please leave the “To:” empty. They will place their own in all of the children’s bag and it is better to just say who it is from. Having them write their own name on each one is great practice. Remember to have them use an upper case letter for the first letter of their name and the rest in lower case.
You can add a treat, like a piece of candy if you would like. Please do not include any candy that has nuts in it or that is manufactured in a factory that produces nuts.
Family Appreciation Day Wednesday, February 15th is Family Appreciation Day. Your family is invited to attend chapel in the Sanctuary with us and come into our classroom for about an hour after chapel. If you sign your child in, please wait and walk with us to chapel. We will be creating a family scrapbook for our classroom. Each family will create their own page. Please bring a copy of a family picture, a family Bible verse that can either be typed out and printed before you arrive, or you may write it on the page during class time. The page will be about 11 by 11 inches. We will provide the white sheet of paper and have some stickers and items to add. Please feel free to bring whatever you may want to add to your page. We have glue sticks for your use. The invitation that was sent home mentioned a family interview. We will just ask for the family names to be written on the page. We will also be serving refreshments and look forward to a wonderful day, celebrating our families. If you cannot be here on Wednesday, please let me know (preferably by e-mail) and I will send home the paper for you to create at home. The finished book will stay in our Early Childhood Center for the children to enjoy.
Clothing Please remember to send heavy, thick, winter coats, hats and mittens with your child. Our recesses last about 25 minutes and if it is not raining, we try to go outside and run. We are introducing science experiments with the children. This week, we made crystals in a jar and made apple and orange juice popsicles. To continue our winter theme, we learned about animals that live in cold climates, made dough snowmen and learned why we need to dress for colder weather.
Library Dad returned on Monday to share a book with us. The kids love to hear him read.
We also learned about Chinese New Year and had Teddy’s grandmother here to explain about the celebration. We had special Chinese crackers and oranges for our snack. Ask your child what they learned.
Next week we will begin our Community Helper month. If you have a special job or trade that you would be willing to share with the classroom, please let us know. We have had policeman, fireman, dentists, nurses, teachers and parents or grandparents with other exciting jobs share with us in the past.

This week, we learned about a man who stood up for his rights and changed a nation. His name was Martin Luther King, Jr.
We experimented with ice and snow and learned about molecules. When molecules heat up, they dance and are very active. When they are cold, they slow down. We had a chance to dance like molecules.
We will continue to talk about cold climates, including animal habitats and things that grow in the cold.
