Second Grade Mission Statement
In Second Grade, we know that God will help us to learn many new skills.
We will work hard, do our best, and always try to accomplish our goals.
Even if we don’t always succeed, we will have a CAN-DO attitude!
Second Grade Slogan
Can Learn, Can Try, Can Do!
April 20, 2012
Curriculum Highlights for the week of 4/23/2012:
Math: Unit 10: Finish Fractions and Probability
Reading: Theme 6: Talent Show: “The Art Lesson”; Writing Projects
Spelling: Unit 26; Test Thursday
Bible: The Early Church
Social Studies: Units 5&6: America’s Past and Government

We have completed our Terra Nova testing. Thanks so much for getting your children here promptly each day. I was very pleased with their testing behavior this week, and everyone worked very hard!
Victory Drill and MFF will resume their regular schedule every day next week.
Our Second Grade Chapel Program will take place next Wednesday, the 25th @ 8:40 a.m. I hope you can join us! Your children just need to wear nice clothes that morning, unless I have mentioned something particular to you for your child. I will be in the Sanctuary, so please bring your child there, instead of the classroom. They can pile their backpacks in the narthex during chapel. We will have a goodie reception in the classroom afterward, so please let me know if you would like to contribute something for everyone to enjoy. If your child has a speaking part, please continue to work with your child. I sent parts home on Wednesday. Don’t worry! They do not need to memorize it, they just need to be able to read smoothly and expressively, so practice at home will be a huge help! Thanks!!
Field Trip!!! On Wednesday, May 30th, the Second Grade will be going to the Central Library (downtown) and the Farmer’s Market at Cesar Chavez Park. The cost is $2 per child to help with the cost of parking. Please send this in with your child’s permission slip. Your child will want to bring some spending money ($5-$7) on the day of the trip for the Farmer’s Market, as well as a disposable sack lunch. We will be checking out books at the library, which can be returned to any Sacramento County Library Branch (Elk Grove and Franklin included.) If your child does not already have a library card, please be sure to apply for one so that they can check out books on the day of the trip. You can now apply for a library card online at www.saclibrary.org, or you can go into any branch to apply. (A parent with I.D. is required.) Please return their permission slips no later than Monday, May 21st.
I like to have lots of parents to drive and chaperone on this trip. If you would like to meet us down there for lunch or for part of our day, you are most welcome! (This is a great option for those with little ones who are unable to supervise 2nd Graders, but would like to join us for the field trip!!!) If you would like to drive, you must be sure you have an auto usage form on file in the office. This is a fantastic field trip!!!
End of the Year Fun! SPLS has reserved A Magical Place in Galt for the end of the year party for grades 1-8, on the afternoon of Friday, May 25th. I will have more details for you soon.
The Apostle’s Creed: We will test the entire Apostle’s Creed on Friday, May 4th. Your child may choose to recite it, or fill in the blank. Please let me know which they would like to do. It is included in the homework packet.
Spotlight on Me! We are done for the year! Thanks everyone for sending in your items. We enjoyed seeing them!
Science Notes from Mrs. Rowley: We used our first simple machine this week (the wheel). The whole purpose of simple machines is to make work easier. Students explored this concept on their own. To encourage exploration, look around your home and neighborhood for wheels and gears.

The kids all worked really hard on their speech selections, and did a great job on the speech meet! Congratulations to Riley Petrali (Poetry), Gavin Tapp (Bible), and Jessica Tseng (Fable) who will be representing St. Peter’s 2nd Grade at the ACSI Speech Meet on May 5th. Alternates are Shane Stockton (Poetry), Greyson Alejandro (Bible), and Daniel Johnson (Fable)respectively. Great job everyone!
Don’t forget that this is the last paper Friday note you will receive for the rest of the school year. Beginning on April 20th, you will begin receiving them by e-mail, and they will continue to be posted on Sycamore. Hard copies can still be received through the office by special request.
Next week is Holy Week. We are so blessed to have the opportunity to reflect on the sorrow and beauty of Christ’s passion, and the knowledge that He suffered all for our benefit. When we leave on Good Friday, we will be leaving in sadness, as we remember the pain that Jesus suffered on the cross. Please take time to worship with your children on Easter Sunday, so that they can hear the joyous end to the story. We will celebrate Christ’s resurrection, as a school, when we return on Monday, April 16th. Don’t forget that Good Friday is a half-day, and we dismiss at noon. Here are some of the activities we will participate in next week:
Monday: All School Palm Processional 8:45 a.m.
Tuesday: Movie Morning in the Fellowship Hall 8:45-9:30 a.m.
Wednesday: Chapel: ECC Seder Meal
Thursday: Seder Meal with 6th Grade Buddies (10:45)
& Gethsemane Prayer time in classrooms (2:30-2:45)
Friday: Cross Making (9:20) and Good Friday Chapel (11:15)
If you do not have a church home, please feel welcome to join us at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church for Worship Services this Easter! Services are at 6 a.m., 8:30 a.m., and 11 a.m.
Please remember that school and daycare will be closed over Easter break, April 9th-13th.
There will be no Friday Folder or Homework Packet going home over the Easter Holiday. Also, because we will begin Terra Nova testing on Tuesday, April 17th, there will be no Victory or Math Drill the week we return. V.Drill, MFF and Homework Packets will be suspended until SAT’s are completed. We will resume all three the week of April 23rd.
In Second Grade, Terra Nova testing will run from Tuesday, April 17th – Friday, April 20th. We will begin promptly at 8:40 a.m. every day. If your child arrives after testing has begun, he/she will have to sit in the office until we are done—no one may be admitted once we have begun testing. On Wednesdays, testing will begin immediately following Chapel. Please make sure your child has a healthy, hearty breakfast (protein!!), and plenty of rest each night. Also, be sure to send a snack each day as always. Each child should bring 1-3 books to have on hand to read, in case they finish testing early.
The week of testing, we will also be concentrating on our 2nd Grade Chapel Program in the afternoons. Our chapel program is on Wednesday, April 25th at 8:40 a.m. Hope you can make it!!
Lanyard Day: Next Wednesday, the 4th, is our AR Chapel for April.
The Apostle’s Creed: We will continue learning the Apostle’s Creed. A creed is a statement of what we believe and teach. Please work on the 3rd Article. This is due, recited, this Friday, April 6th. We will test the entire Apostle’s Creed on Friday, April 27th. Your child may choose to recite it, or fill in the blank. It is attached so that you can practice over the next 3 weeks.
Spotlight on Me! Greyson Alejandro will be featured next week. Allen Navarro will be featured the week of April 16th.

The kids have been working very hard on their speech selections. This weekend is their final chance to practice and refine before the speech meet on Tuesday. Remember, memorization is only a small part of what we are looking for. Please work with your child on their presentation and expression as well. I will be grading children on Monday, as I will not be with them for the actual speech meet, so please be sure they are ready Monday. (I will be judging in another room.) We will do speech meet practice for Victory Drill on Monday, but not on Tuesday. Victory Drill will resume on Thursday. I know all the kids will do great!!
The Apostle’s Creed: We will continue learning the Apostle’s Creed. A creed is a statement of what we believe and teach. Please continue to work on the 2nd Article, which explains who Jesus is and what He has done for us. This is due, recited, this Friday, March 30th. (Please note, there was an error on what I sent you last week in the homework packet—it has been corrected on this week’s copy!)
Spotlight on Me! Jessica Tseng will be featured next week. Greyson Alejandro will be featured the week of April 2nd.
Science Notes from Mrs. Rowley: We learned Newton’s First Law (inertia). To enhance their understanding, ask your student to show you the hand motions as they recite the Law. If they need help, just give them the first 3 words and it should spark their memory (An object in motion…) FYI: An object in motion stays in motion until a force stops it; an object at rest stays at rest until a force moves it.
Office Notes: March 30th will be the last paper Friday note, unless you request them through the office. Friday notes will be e-mailed, and posted on the individual class pages on Sycamore.
Lenten Confession:
“We confess that we are sinful and have sinned by our own fault in our thoughts words and deeds; by what we have done and by what we have left undone. Forgive us, Lord, for not being faithful. Accept our repentance for the wrongs we have done, for our blindness to human need and suffering, our indifference to injustice,
and our neglect of doing what is good.
Forgive us good Lord.”

Reader’s week has been so much fun! We especially enjoyed cuddling up with slippers and pillows (along with yummy hot chocolate from Allen’s grandma!) to read our books. I hope you are able to find time yourself to curl up with a good book every now and then! It’s a great way to relax and treat yourself!
Dress Code: With the change in seasons, it is a good time to review the dress code, to make sure your child is in compliance. Some of the main concerns school wide are clothes with holes or fraying, jeans or shorts with decorative stitching, necklines, and the length of shorts. Please take a moment to look over the dress code so that we can all be on the same page. Thanks so much—I know you all work hard to follow the guidelines!
Speech Meet: Thanks for working with your kids on their selections! Starting this Monday, March 19th, we will do Speech Meet practice instead of Victory Drill. Instead of drilling, we will have parents listen to kids’ speech meet selections, and give tips and encouragement. This will help them prepare for the meet on the 27th. Your child’s selection is clipped inside their Victory Drill Folder. Please put your initial and the date on the page of the selection each time you practice with your child. We will do the same when we practice them at school. Please be sure your child brings their folder to school next week, with the selection inside. Your child will need to be able to present his/her selection by Monday, the 26th, which is when I will be grading them. (I will be judging another class on the day of the meet.)
Keep practicing! Thanks!
Sports Day: Time for another spirit day!! This Monday is Sports Day. Your child can wear a sports jersey or uniform to show off their favorite sport or team. Please leave all sports equipment (balls, bats, hockey sticks, etc.) at home. Thanks!
Spotlight on Me! Joshua Alejandro will be featured next week. Jessica Tseng will be featured the week of March 26th.

Thank you all for meeting with me this past week! I just want to say thank you to all of you parents who entrust your children to me each day. These “mystery” items will be revealed and shared during a small group discussion in the Fellowship Hall. Please, note they are not to bring toy guns or swords to school. They may draw them and place them in their bag

Our magnet/electricity booklets will be going home Tuesday. In it you will find background information, what your child has been working on in class, and some enrichment things you can do at home.
Office Notes: All school families are invited to the family dinners sponsored by St. Peter’s Lutheran church. Next dinner is tonight, Mar. 9th at 6:00. Sign up in the glassed walk way, and come and enjoy.

Parents, I will give you more information on how these work once everybody has their notebooks at school. Also, while you are out shopping, we are down to our last box of Kleenex, so we could definitely use some donations, as we are heading into allergy season! Thanks so much!

Science Notes from Mrs. Rowley: We actually spent an extra day on static electricity because the students were so interested. Get some balloons and straws and ask them to recreate and expand on the experiments we did. Next week we will begin our current electricity coverage.

Thanks so much to our wonderful room moms, and to all of you, for the wonderful Birthday brunch that you put together for Mrs. Tom. It was a lovely treat, and I know she was touched by your kindness, and by the precious homemade birthday cards from the kids! (She is also looking forward to using her Target gift card!)
I have been truly overwhelmed with the wonderful response to our cultural sharing month! Thanks so much to all of the families who have helped us to learn more about each other and the world around us! We are not through yet!
Today we enjoyed delicious pancit and pan de sal provided by Mrs. Alejandro and Mrs. Hernandez to represent their Philippine culture. We are looking forward to Hawaiian lei-making from Joshua A., Polish food from Rylie K., Norwegian treats from Philip, and a presentation about the Tuskeegee Airmen from Shane’s dad. Wow! We are soooo blessed!
23rd Psalm: I have already had a few kids recite for me! Keep working on it with your child, so that they can recite it for me no later than Friday, Feb. 24th.
100th Day: The 100th day of school is coming up next Friday, Feb. 10th. We do not do 100 projects in 2nd Grade, (whew!) but we do wear our blue St. Peter’s shirts on that day to help the 1st Graders get 100 blue shirts!
American Symbols Project: This project is due Thursday, February 16th, and children will present them on that Friday, the 17th. Thanks! This project is not eligible for the homework pass. Some children still have not let me know what symbol they are doing.
We Love Our Families! Mark your calendars! On the morning of Wednesday, February 15th, we will be celebrating our annual Family Appreciation Day. This year’s activity focus will be on family heritage. I hope you can join us!
Valentine’s Day: We will have a classroom party on Tuesday, February 14th. We will enjoy treats and a special movie at the end of the day, from 2-3 p.m. Please let me or the room moms know if you would like to send in a nice treat for us to share. So far, we have cupcakes and cookies. Some fruit and juice would finish it off nicely. Let me know! J

As far as I can tell, none of our 2nd Grade families have visited the Sycamore class website. I am posting things each week. Please be sure to get your password and get set up—it’s a great resource!
Our cultural sharing has continued to be a real learning experience. We are hearing all kinds of interesting things, and tasting lots of yummy foods!! This morning, Riley McGonigle brought in Irish scones for us to enjoy. Next week we will welcome Allen and his grandma and grandpa who will share stories and food from their Mexican heritage. Also, Joshua E. will be bringing in some delicious Italian food. We have lots more on the horizon! Stay posted!
We were also blessed to enjoy an unexpected special presentation from “Mistress Lassanski” (Madelyn Bennett’s grandmother), from the San Joaquin Historical Museum. She was visiting 3rd Grade and graciously offered to visit us as well! She brought trunks of items from daily life in the 1800’s, for the children to see and even touch! This fit in perfectly with our Social Studies unit as we study our heritage! The children were fascinated!
In Bible, we will continue to learn the 23rd Psalm. We will work on this over the next few weeks in class and at home. Your child will need to recite it to me no later than Friday, Feb. 24th. They may recite it to me whenever they are ready. Please encourage them and work with them on this at home. Thanks!
It is enrollment time again! If you have not already done so, pick up your child’s enrollment packet from the office. Enrollment for returning families for the 2012-2013 school year is next Wednesday, Feb. 1st.
