Buckle your seatbelts because next week is jam-packed with activities and blessings!!

Take a look below!!

Next Wednesday, the 15th is our annual Family Appreciation Chapel. I hope we have lots of family and friends coming to make our day special! Remember, if you are unable to join us, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and even special family friends are welcome! (Please let me know if your child will not have a parent or other guest coming that day.) It is always a wonderful morning! Chapel starts @ 8:40 a.m.

That morning, families, please check in with me in the classroom, to drop off your child’s things, and then you and your child may proceed to the sanctuary to sit together.  After chapel, each class, along with their family members, will be working together in the classrooms to create family pages to be added to a whole-school book, which will be bound and placed in St. Peter’s Library. Please be sure to see your child’s homework packet, which has the items you will need that day. (Those items are due Monday, the 13th.) Then we will enjoy some yummy goodies put together especially for you, our wonderful families. At 10:30, you can drop your kids off with a hug and a kiss, out on the playground, for an all-school recess. We are looking forward to seeing you!!

American Symbols Project: This project is due next Thursday, February 16th, and children will present them on Friday, the 17th. Thanks! Take a look at your child’s homework packet for information about his/her presentation.

Thanks so much to our wonderful room moms, and to all of you, for the wonderful Birthday brunch that you put together for Mrs. Tom. It was a lovely treat, and I know she was touched by your kindness, and by the precious homemade birthday cards from the kids! (She is also looking forward to using her Target gift card!)

I have been truly overwhelmed with the wonderful response to our cultural sharing month! Thanks so much to all of the families who have helped us to learn more about each other and the world around us! We are not through yet!

Greetings from Second Grade!

As far as I can tell, none of our 2nd Grade families have visited the Sycamore class website. I am posting things each week. Please be sure to get your password and get set up—it’s a great resource!

Our cultural sharing has continued to be a real learning experience. We are hearing all kinds of interesting things, and tasting lots of yummy foods!! This morning, Riley McGonigle brought in Irish scones for us to enjoy.  Next week we will welcome Allen and his grandma and grandpa who will share stories and food from their Mexican heritage. Also, Joshua E. will be bringing in some delicious Italian food. We have lots more on the horizon! Stay posted!

We were also blessed to enjoy an unexpected special presentation from “Mistress Lassanski” (Madelyn Bennett’s grandmother), from the San Joaquin Historical Museum. She was visiting 3rd Grade and graciously offered to visit us as well! She brought trunks of items from daily life in the  1800’s, for the children to see and even touch! This fit in perfectly with our Social Studies unit as we study our heritage! The children were fascinated!

In Bible, we will continue to learn the 23rd Psalm. We will work on this over the next few weeks in class and at home. Your child will need to recite it to me no later than Friday, Feb. 24th. They may recite it to me whenever they are ready. Please encourage them and work with them on this at home. Thanks!

It is enrollment time again! If you have not already done so, pick up your child’s enrollment packet from the office. Enrollment for returning families for the 2012-2013 school year is next Wednesday, Feb. 1st.

 Greetings from Second Grade!

Thanks to Tyler’s family for the yummy red beans and rice that we got to try today! We are looking forward to Maya and her mom’s presentation on Monday afternoon, and Lauren will be bringing in some Mexican treats on Tuesday.  Also, Jessica, Samantha, and Kiaya will be presenting on Friday with their moms. We are learning so much!

In Bible, we will be learning the 23rd Psalm. We will work on this over the next few weeks in class. Your child will need to recite it to me no later than Friday, Feb. 24th. They may recite it to me whenever they are ready. Please encourage them and work with them on this at home. Thanks! (The verse in this week’s letter will be tested next Friday, the 27th. You would begin working on the 23rd Psalm after the 27th. I am just giving you a heads up!!)

Parents, please know that we are doing this as a way to help your child grow in their relationship with the Lord, not just as a classroom assignment. I will be encouraging them to write the words of this Psalm on their hearts, so that it will be an aid and comfort to them in difficult times of fear or uncertainty. The 23rd Psalm is a powerful reminder that we have a loving Shepherd who is constantly caring for and watching over us! Amen!

If you or your child has anything special that you would like to share with us from your family’s culture in the next month, please let me know!(Don’t forget, our American culture counts too!

Valentine’s Day: We will have a classroom party on Tuesday, February 14th. I will give you more details in next week’s letter. Your child may bring valentines for all of their classmates. I have included a class list in this letter for your convenience.

Spotlight on Me!  Maya Sorkhabi will be featured next week. Kiaya Batkin will be featured the week of January 30th.

Science Notes from Mrs. Rowley: This week, we have been reviewing materials magnets are attracted to and made some generalizations (magnets stick to metal—but not all metal). Next week we will continue learning about magnet strength and factors that can influence a magnet. To facilitate learning, ask your student what loadstone is (a natural magnet rock) and look on a map to find the North and South Pole.

Greetings from Second Grade!

Don’t forget that Monday is the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, and both school and daycare are closed. Enjoy your three days off! See you Tuesday! (Everyone will do V.Drill on Tuesday, but we will not do MFF until Thursday and Friday.)

By the way, with the start of the second half of the year, our class now has the opportunity to use the computer lab for thirty minutes every Friday. We are currently using the Mavis Beacon typing program to learn keyboarding. We will also take AR quizzes, and use the search engine to research for upcoming projects.

100th Day: The 100th day of school is coming up on Friday, Feb. 10th. We do not do 100 projects in 2nd Grade, (whew!) but we do wear our blue St. Peter’s shirts on that day to help the 1st Graders get 100 blue shirts!

1,000 Projects: Okay, moms and dads, after you pick yourselves up off the floor, I will tell you that your child will not have to come up with a collection of 1,000 things! Instead, your child will be working at their own pace to write their numbers from 1 to 1,000 during class time. We work in increments of 100 at a time. This may sound easy to you, but many students actually struggle to complete this project, and the feel a real sense of accomplishment when they do! J This activity goes along with our new Math unit, “Place Value and Numbers to 1,000”.

American Symbols Project: Included in your child’s Homework Packet is a special project that goes along with our Unit 3 “Ways of Living” in our Social Studies. Please read over it with your child and let me know by Monday, January 23rd which symbol your child will be doing. This project is due Thursday, February 16th, and children will present them on that Friday, the 17th. Thanks! This project is not eligible for the homework pass.

If you or your child has anything special that you would like to share with us from your family’s culture in the next month, we would still love to taste it, see it, or hear about it! Please let me know so I can plan time to share. So far we are looking forward to some red beans and rice from Tyler’s family, Arabic and Iranian food & culture from Maya, treats from Mexican culture from Allen, and a Chinese New Year presentation on the 27th from Kiaya, Samantha, and Jessica. (Don’t forget, our American culture counts too!)

Tacky Day! Next Thursday, January 19th is Tacky Day. You child can mix and match colors and patterns for a really tacky fashion statement on this crazy day!

Spotlight on Me!  We will take a break next week, since it is a shortened week. Maya Sorkhabi will be featured the week of January 23rd.

Science Notes from Mrs. Rowley: We’ve learned about the magnetic field this week and how our earth is a giant magnet. Next week we will learn the strength of various magnetic fields. To facilitate learning, if you have magnets try to see how many papers the magnet can hold onto the refrigerator or other surface. Some students have asked where to get magnet. I know Lowe’s and Home Depot sell various magnets at a reasonable price.

Notes from the Office: First school Fellowship meeting of the New Year will be Thursday, January 19th, at 8:40 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

In this New Year,

“God will meet all your needs

according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:19

Believe it and rejoice!! You are loved by Him! (And me!!!)

Love, Mrs. Wacker

                                                                                                                        December 9, 2011

Greetings from Second Grade!

Thanks to all of the parents who accompanied us to Tops Yogurt! It was a delicious treat that was well-earned! I hope everyone enjoyed their reward!

I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas program on Thursday. The kids worked very hard and I was very proud of them all!

Next Wednesday is our field trip to sing to the seniors at Golden Pond and El Camino Gardens. I would like to leave by 10:15. Thank you to those who volunteered to drive or chaperone. We will wear our blue St. Peter’s shirts, but it would also be cute to wear hats or scarves so we look a little Christmassy! We will return between 2:15 and 2:30. My parents

for this trip are: Mrs. Alejandro, Mrs. Ruiz (chap),Mr. Mitzel, Mrs. Batkin, Mrs. Chew (chap), Mrs. Tseng (chap), Mrs. Elboom, Mrs. Hernandez, Mrs. Leyva, Mr. McGonigle, Mrs. Rustad, Mrs. Sorkhabi (chap), Mrs. Stockton, and Mr. Temesgen. Remember, we will have lunch at McDonald’s between performances. (Thanks for the quick response on the lunch orders!!)

We’re nearly there! I can’t believe how the months of November and December have flown by! This is the last note you will receive from me in the year 2011, as I will not send Friday Folders home next week. (It’s too difficult to keep track of them over the holiday!) I will send a homework packet and a brief update letter home on Tuesday, January 3rd, when we return. (Monday the 2nd is a Federal holiday, so we have it off!) These will both include the spelling words and memory verse-hopefully the same ones this time!! Ha!

Buddies! It is a tradition that 2nd and 6th grades are buddy classes. We met our buddies and had some special reading time yesterday. We will be decorating Christmas cookies with them next Thursday to celebrate the season. We will not be exchanging gifts with them, just enjoying some fun time together!

Carol Sing: It is also a St. Peter’s tradition to gather in the sanctuary to sing Christmas carols together. We will be singing from 9:30-10:10. Join us if you are free!

Christmas Party: The children will not be exchanging gifts with each other this year, but we will enjoy some special time as a classroom family before we go home for the holiday. If you would like to contribute a goodie for us to enjoy, please let me or the room moms know by next Wednesday. We will celebrate on Friday, Dec. 16th, from 11:15-12 p.m., when we dismiss. Parents are welcome to join us! (Remember, it’s a minimum day!)

Lanyard Day: Our next Lanyard Chapel is on Wednesday, Dec. 14th. We will be able to attend chapel as we are not leaving for our field trip until 10:15.

Spotlight on Me!  Philip Rustad will be featured the week of December 12th. Samantha Chew will be featured the week of January 3rd, when we return from vacation.

Greetings from Second Grade!

I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday! My turkey turned out great, and we had a nice time with family. Now, on to Christmas!!!

We welcomed our new classmate, James Woodrum, this week. Please be sure to say hello to him and his family when you see them! The kids did a great job of welcoming him!

Next Thursday, Dec. 8th is our Elementary Christmas Program @ 6:30 p.m. Please have your children dress in their Holiday/Sunday best, and bring them to me in the Fellowship Hall by 6:20. I am asking that you please hold their coats for them during the program.

We have been very busy this week beginning our Christmas activities. We are currently learning about the Advent Wreath, and the meaning of the candles in it. We have our own version of the Advent Wreath made out of our handprints, posted on our wall. We are also putting together a Scripture Countdown puzzle. The kids enjoy this immensely! Are you doing something for Advent at home? It is a great way to enjoy the anticipation of Christmas!

Yummy, yummy yogurt! To celebrate our AR 100% achievement, we will walk over to Tops Yogurt next Friday, Dec. 9th. The cost is $3.50 for 4 oz. of yogurt and two toppings. Please  fill out the enclosed permission slip for your child and return it with their money as soon as possible. I will pay all at once with my credit card to make things easier. We would love to have parents walk along with us for extra safety. Blue shirts are required for students! We love parents to wear them too! J We will leave school @ 2 p.m. and return before school gets out.

A Christmas Visit! On Wednesday, Dec. 14th, as our mission project for this year, the Second Grade is going to sing Christmas songs for the senior citizens at Golden Pond and Atria El Camino Gardens, two Senior living complexes. We will also be having lunch in between performances. I am trying to arrange it for the McDonald’s on Bradshaw Rd, but I am still waiting to hear.  I will need parents to drive us there and to chaperone. We will leave school @ 10:15 a.m., and should return @ 2:15 or 2:30. Everyone needs to wear their blue St. Peter’s shirt, and a scarf or winter hat to look festive. We’ve done this in years past and have truly been blessed by the experience. I hope you can come along! Permission slips are coming home today.

Lanyard Day: Our next Lanyard Chapel is on Wednesday, Dec. 14th. We will be able to attend chapel as we are not leaving for our field trip until 10:15.

Thanks to Rylie K’s mommy for decorating our cute alien box for the book fair! I hope you all had the opportunity to browse the Scholastic Book Fair this past week. It continues through 4 p.m. today.

Spotlight on Me!  Robert Courtnier will be featured the week of December 5th.

Greetings from Second Grade!

I just want to take a moment to thank you all for your participation in Operation Christmas Child. I know it took extra time in your already busy schedules, and I appreciate your willingness to take your child shopping. I hope you and your children were blessed by the experience. Thanks to Mrs. Alejandro, Mrs. Ruiz, Mrs. Rustad and Mr. McGonigle for their help packing boxes and serving lunch. You blessed us with your help! Thanks also to my room moms for arranging everything—we had a wonderful time together!

We did it! Our class achieved 100% of their AR personal point goals for the first trimester! They did a fantastic job! I will have information about Tops Yogurt in the very near future! We would love parents to join us!

Can you believe that next week is Thanksgiving? I pray that you all have a wonderful time with family during our break! I will not be sending home Friday Folders next week, and there will be no Bible verse or Spelling Test. I will send a brief update note and homework packet home on Monday, the 28th. We will do Victory Drill and Math Facts as usual on Monday and Tuesday.

Let Us Give Thanks Together: Next Wednesday, Nov. 23rd, the Primary grades (1-3) will celebrate our Thanksgiving Feast from 11:00-12:00. Families and siblings are welcome! You may be hearing from our room moms if we are missing anything essential. We need parents to help with set-up and clean-up too! (Especially clean up!) Please let me know if you can help out.  If you could come @ 10:30 a.m. for set-up, and plan to be here till @12:15 (or when clean-up is done), we would be very grateful! Don’t forget that we dismiss at noon that day!

Books, Books, Books! Scholastic Book Fair is back the week of Nov. 28th-Dec.2nd! Students will have the opportunity to browse the book fair and make out wish lists. I will not be sending out orders this month, so this is your opportunity to get books for Christmas. Mrs. Stender always has need of volunteers for the week. This is a great parent hour opportunity, so please call the office if you are interested.

Christmas Program: Our Elementary Christmas Program will take place on Thursday, Dec. 8th, from 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Please mark your calendars.

Spotlight on Me!  We will not have anyone next week, as it is a short week. Riley Petrali will be featured the week of November 28th.

Notes from the Office: Report Cards will be mailed home on Wed. 11/23. They do not need to be returned, this is your copy. If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
