6th Grade News

 

2/17/12

Bible:  We will continue with the book of Matthew by looking at how Jesus called Matthew to be a disciple.  We will also be looking at the first time Jesus sent out all of his disciples.  Our Bible verse for this week is Psalm 149:1.        

Language Arts:  In Language Arts we will be reading “The Challenge” by Gary Soto and focusing on story structure.  We will be creating story maps for “The Challenge,” as well as other stories we have read this year.  The new spelling word list can be found on practice book page 417.      

Science:   Chapter 8, Weathering and Erosion will be coming to an end.  The chapter 8 test will be on Friday, 2/24, following Jeopardy on Thursday.       

Math:  Chapter 6 test Thursday, 2/23. On Friday, we will be exploring the customary units of measure. I need donations of CLEAN, EMPTY milk jugs: gallon size, pint size, and quart size. I also need to borrow cup size measuring cups. These items need to be brought to class by Wednesday, 2/22, to see if we will have enough for Friday’s activity.

History:  Students will review Chapter 7 vocabulary on Tuesday. They will review major concepts on Wednesday and the Chapter 7 test will be given on Thursday, 2/23.

6th Grade News

Bible:  We will be updating our bulletin boards this week with the study of Fanny Crosby, the blind hymn writer.  We will also be looking at several other famous historical Christians who let their light shine to the world.  Please be sure to bring a blindfold to class for Monday.  Our Bible verse for this week will be Romans 12:12.      

Language Arts:  This coming week we will be reading a portion of Last Summer With Maizon by Jacqueline Woodson.  We will continue to work on making inferences about our reading.    

Science:   I really enjoyed creating and erupting volcanoes this week.  Our next chapter in science is on weathering and erosion.   

Math:  We will continue to explore Integers. On Wednesday, we will play Integer Hopscotch. Each child needs to bring in a small token (rock, eraser, coin) to mark their spot on the hopscotch grid.

I will be sending home a Math Facts Progress Report for each student. The goal is for a student to complete 20 levels of Math Flash each trimester. Please sign and return the form on Monday.

6th Grade News

 

1/27/12

If you have not received your Sycamore password and direction sheet than you may request them in the school office.

7th grade is collecting baby wipes to donate to Loaves and Fishes. We are asking each middle school family to donate one package of baby wipes by January 31st. Thank you.

Bible:  We have finished up our lesson on the teachings of Jesus.  Our assessment will be on Tuesday, 1/30.  After that it is on to Unit 5, Jesus Illustrating His Message.    

Language Arts:  This week we will be writing problem-solution compositions and comparing different sources of information for accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and bias.  Our “Where the Red Fern Grows” spelling test will be on Thursday.    

Science:   We have started our lesson on volcanoes.  We will be building our own volcanoes, and I can use some help on collecting some materials.  I will put up a sign up sheet on Monday letting you know what we need for anyone who can donate anything.   

Math:  Tuesday is the last day to donate Baby Wipes. Currently, 6th grade has donated 1 box of baby wipes.

In math, we will begin Chapter 6 on Tuesday (Integers). I need a donation of one small box of sidewalk chalk by Friday 2/3. Please let me know if you can donate this item. Thanks

History:  Chapter 6 continues. Students are taking a quiz at the end of each lesson so there will not be a chapter test.

6th Grade News

1/20/12

Current class grades are updated every Tuesday by 4pm. These grades can be found online in Sycamore using your username and password.

Bible:  This week we will be examining what Jesus taught about worrying, judging others, asking and seeking, and fruit and foundation.  Our new Bible verse is Matthew 7:5 and the quiz will be on Thursday. 

Language Arts:  In language arts we will be starting a new unit titled “Growing Up.”  This new unit kicks off with us reading a segment of “Where the Red Fern Grows,” and we will be focusing on making generalizations. 

Science:   I have pushed back our test on Earthquakes to avoid a test logjam with math and history.  The test will now be on Wednesday, 1/25.  After that we will be moving on to Volcanoes. 

Math:  Next week, the students will complete an in class project about a famous mathematician. A rubric went home on Wednesday. If your child lost the rubric, a copy can be found on Mrs. Stewart’s 6th grade Sycamore math page under Documents.

History:  Please remember that the Ancient Egypt projects are due on Friday, 1/27. In class students will begin Chapter 6 which is a study of Kush and other African kingdoms.

Bible:  We will continue with the teachings of Jesus including what he taught about giving, prayer, and fasting.  Our new Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:31 and the quiz will be on Thursday. 

Language Arts:  In Language Arts we will be learning how to write business letters.  Our spelling test is on Thursday and is the spelling list Dinosaur Ghosts and can be found on page 415 of the practice book.          

Science:   Our lesson on Earthquakes will be coming to a close.  The exam on Earthquakes will be on Thursday, 1/18.

Math:  Math will have an exam covering chapter 5 on Friday, 1/20.

6th Grade News

Bible:  In Bible we will be studying more about light and adding to our bulletin board.      

Language Arts:  We will be brainstorming and organizing our stories that we are going to write.  The stories can be fiction or non-fiction, and we have already picked out the topics for our stories.  We will be working on developing strong plots, characters, and settings as well as making believable dialogue.      

Science:  In science we will be creating models of plate boundaries using shoe boxes that students need to bring from home.  Please have your shoe boxes on Monday.    

History: Students will study daily life in Ancient Egypt using Chapter 5 and related resources.

12/2/11

Bible:  We will be finishing our lesson on, “Who is this Man?”, and our assessment will be on Tuesday, 12/6.     

Language Arts:  In Language Arts we will be writing a news article and learning how to improve our writing by adding more details.    

Science:  On Monday and Tuesday we will be reviewing Ch. 4 in preparation for our test on Wednesday.  After this we are onto what happens at plate boundaries, especially our very own San Andreas Fault. 

History: Students will begin a study of the geography of Ancient Egypt.

Math:  We will be finishing up Chapter 4. There will be an exam on Tuesday, 12/13.

Reports will be mailed home on 11/23, and they do not need to be returned.  If you have any questions about the report cards, please feel free to contact me.  Please don’t forget to do your Homeconnect HW every week. 

Bible:  Our current unit in Bible is titled, “Who is this man?”  We will track Jesus’ journey through the Bible, beginning with his family tree and how he fulfilled Old Testament prophesies, to his birth, and the escape out of Egypt.    

Language Arts:  We will be focusing on poetry this week using the book, Love That Dog.  We will be creating our own shape poems.    

Science:  We have started our unit on plate tectonics and will be covering seafloor spreading.

History: Students will complete Chapter 4, Lesson 2 in class.

Math:  Students need to complete 15 minutes or 7 levels of Homeconnect every week.

Middle School students are partnering with Loaves and Fishes to raise goods for the needy.  The month of November is all about toilet paper.  Please help us to collect as much toilet paper as possible so that we can really do some good.

I’m also sending home information and envelopes for Operation Christmas Child.  Your children should have a flier explaining what it is and how to pack a shoe box.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

Bible:  Students will have to answer several questions about the Sacraments through either a letter to an unbelieving friend, a poster, a dialogue or skit, or a poem or song.  The test for unit 2 will be on Friday.  We will also be updating our in class bulletin boards by examining foundations, and the importance of God as the foundation for our lives.    

Language Arts:  We will be improving our reading comprehension by making predictions about what we read.  We will be using an excerpt from the story, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, to help us make predictions. 

Science:  This week in science we will focus specifically on temperature, thermal energy, and heat.  We will also be looking at the different ways thermal energy is transferred from place to place.

History: Chapter 3 will be completed next week. The Chapter 3 test is scheduled for Tuesday, 11/15. We will review in class on 11/14. Classzone.com also provides review activities.

Math:  Chapter 3 exam on Tuesday, 11/8.

10/28/11

Bible:  We will be learning about our second Sacrament, the Sacrament of Holy Communion.  We will be learning why we take Communion, what we receive from Communion, and why it is important to do it correctly.  The Bible verse for the week is 1 John 1:7.

Language Arts:  In Language Arts we will be looking at creating complex sentences and getting rid of those pesky run-on sentences.  We will also be covering writing and addressing a friendly letter.

Science:  For science we will looking at different types of energies with a focus on thermal energy. 

History: Students will explore art and architecture in preparation for their visit to the Crocker Art Ark. The Chapter 3 test is rescheduled for Tuesday, 11/15.

Math:  6th grade will continue on in chapter 3, Data and Statictics. On Tuesday, we will explore geometric shapes and the concepts of volume, perimeter, and area in order to prepare for our Art Ark visit.
