Greetings from Second Grade!

We have completed our Terra Nova testing. Thanks so much for getting your children here promptly each day. I was very pleased with their testing behavior this week, and everyone worked very hard!

Victory Drill and MFF will resume their regular schedule every day next week.

Our Second Grade Chapel Program will take place next Wednesday, the 25^th @ 8:40 a.m. I hope you can join us! Your children just need to wear nice clothes that morning, unless I have mentioned something particular to you for your child. I will be in the Sanctuary, so please bring your child there, instead of the classroom. They can pile their backpacks in the narthex during chapel. We will have a goodie reception in the classroom afterward, so please let me know if you would like to contribute something for everyone to enjoy. If your child has a speaking part, please continue to work with your child. I sent parts home on Wednesday. Don’t worry! They do not need to memorize it, they just need to be able to read smoothly and expressively, so practice at home will be a huge help! Thanks!!

Field Trip!!! On Wednesday, May 30^th, the Second Grade will be going to the Central Library (downtown) and the Farmer’s Market at Cesar Chavez Park. The cost is $2 per child to help with the cost of parking. Please send this in with your child’s permission slip. Your child will want to bring some spending money ($5-$7) on the day of the trip for the Farmer’s Market, as well as a disposable sack lunch. We will be checking out books at the library, which can be returned to any Sacramento County Library Branch (Elk Grove and Franklin included.) If your child does not already have a library card, please be sure to apply for one so that they can check out books on the day of the trip. You can now apply for a library card online at www.saclibrary.org, or you can go into any branch to apply. (A parent with I.D. is required.) Please return their permission slips no later than Monday, May 21^st.

I like to have lots of parents to drive and chaperone on this trip. If you would like to meet us down there for lunch or for part of our day, you are most welcome! (This is a great option for those with little ones who are unable to supervise 2^nd Graders, but would like to join us for the field trip!!!) If you would like to drive, you must be sure you have an auto usage form on file in the office. This is a fantastic field trip!!!

End of the Year Fun! SPLS has reserved A Magical Place in Galt for the end of the year party for grades 1-8, on the afternoon of Friday, May 25^th. I will have more details for you soon.

The Apostle’s Creed: We will test the entire Apostle’s Creed on Friday, May 4^th. Your child may choose to recite it, or fill in the blank. Please let me know which they would like to do. It is included in the homework packet.

Spotlight on Me! We are done for the year! Thanks everyone for sending in your items. We enjoyed seeing them!

The weather has been beautiful, the children have worked diligently on their TerraNova tests this week, and I am happy to be back in the classroom after a nice Easter Break. God is so good.

Field trip on the Horizon : When: Friday, May 4th

Where: California State Capitol

Time: 8:45 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Cost: is free

Students will be taking a tour of the capitol. As always I will be needing drivers for this field trip. This is going to be a short one – we need to get back and clean our room and get set up for Open House that evening. Permission slips will be going home today. Please fill them out and return to me as soon as possible. Many thanks.

C Basketball tournament : is tomorrow at St. Peter’s. Come on out and support the 3rd and 4th grade basketball players. I will be in the snack bar seving up delicious snacks and wearing my new crown (thanks to Joe) for I have now become Queen of the Snack Bar! Hope to see you there.

Book Orders : I am sending out the last book orders for the year. If possible, please have the order forms returned to me no later than Friday, April 27th. If you have any questions please let me know. Book catalogs went home with your child today.

Book Pillow and Slipper Read : We are going to have our last book, pillow , and slipper read for the year, next Friday, April 27. Have your little dumpling bring their favorite book to read, their pillow and their slippers. They may also bring a blanket if they would like lay it on the floor.

Spelling: Practice book pages 299-301 are due on Friday. The spelling words can be found on page 423 under the title Pioneer Girl.

Civil War Field Trip at Gibson Ranch: All of the forms are in. Thank you! I love not having thins hanging over my head. We are all set to go. My drivers are Christy Hellem, Christina Hogan, Larry McGlone, and Sarah McClellan.

Phones at school: If your child brings a phone to school, our policy is that the phone needs to be kept in the office during the school day.

Science: We’ve been exploring the Ocean in depth.As we have been exploring, we are seeing how God has created each animal and plant with the unique capabilities to survive in its environment. These things cannot have happened by chance. The psalmist wrote, “The Heavens declare the Glory of God.” What a creative God we have.

Goals: These people have met their 75% goal or higher!!!!! Hope, Sydney, Daniela, Kayla, Jasmine, Tim, Kristen, Colby, Isaac, Hannah, and Natalie Way to go, my little turkeys!!! The rest of you need to be reading every night for at least 20 minutes to reach your goal of 75% by May 4th! Your reading grade will be affected if you are not reading.

If you haven’t passed the Home Connect Math Facts in a Flash, you should be visiting this site and practicing for a minimum of 15 minutes every night. Please let me know when you are ready to test on your level. If you do not visit the site, I need a note from home explaining why you are not doing this. Keep in mind, the computer lab is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays for you to do Home Connect if your computer is not working. You are graded on your progress.

Office Notes:

· Lanyard Day – Next Awards chapel for A.R. will be May 9, 2012. Students may wear their AR star shirt on this day if they have earned one.
· May 3 – National Day of Prayer. The sanctuary will be open at 7a.m. if you wish to come in to pray. I will be taking my students during the day to offer up their prayers.

Class Notes:

· Just one more day of testing on Mon. with Terra Nova, and we’ll be done – except for make-up tests with absent children.
· C basketball tournament – grades 3 & 4 on Sat., April 21. Go teams!!
· Open House – May 4 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. This is a great time to check out the next year’s grade your children will be in, as well as see what we have been doing.

First Grade News April 20, 2012

We will resume Victory Drill this week. Please be ready to test on Victory Drill Tuesday morning. We will test for Math Facts in a Flash on Friday. Please practice at home.

1^st Grade Field Trip Thursday, May 8^th is our field trip to the Galt Herald Newspaper. We still need more drivers. We will be leaving at 9:30 and returning at 11:45. Please wear your blue St. Peter’s t-shirt as is required for all field trips.

All School Field Trip - Mark your calendar!

We will be going on an all school field trip May 25^th to – A Magical Place in Galt..

At 11:40 leave for A Magical Place and return to school at.2:15. I will send permission slips home soon.

First Grade Chapel Program

The First Grade Chapel Program is on May 16^th at 8:30. Please plan on joining us. We will have special treats following our program. It’s a fun day filled with worship, fellowship and community service.

1^st Grade mission project

Please start collectingfrom family and friends new plain, white socks for our mission project. Ankle to mid-calf length preferred. We will be collecting them from the entire school and then sort them for the clothes closet after our chapel program on May 16th. You can start bringing them to school on May 14th. Our plan is to sort, label and put the donated socks into bags by type and size. I then need a volunteer to take the socks to the Food Bank/Clothes Closet on Dino Drive in Elk Grove. Please let me know if you would like to help out.

Track and Field

I will be coaching Track and Field again this year. A flyer is included in your Friday folder with the practice schedule. We will begin next Tuesday and have practice every Tuesday and Thursday to May 17^th. There is a parent meeting on Tuesday, May 1^st at 4:30, out near the track. No worries if you can’t make the meeting. I’ll give you the scoop! The big conference meet is on Saturday, May 19^th at Sheldon High School. It is a fun filled morning and everyone gets a ribbon for every event.

Fourth Grade’s Friday Frolic

This week has been another wet and wild one. The Speech meet went splendily, I am so proud of the children. Looking over their scores, it seems that they did very well. I would like to congratulate the winners: Poetry – Kyle Fedor, Fables – Onnika DeBusk, Bible – Christopher Sargent. Thank you so much for your extra support in getting them ready to perform their speeches.

The field trip to see Young Thomas Edison was very good. The children were well behaved and enjoyed the production. Many thank “yous” go out to my parents for their willingness to drive and chaperon during the play.

Coming up next week is one of my favorite weeks of the year – Holy Week. You are always welcome to join us for any of our special activities that we have planned throughout the week. Here is a schedule of the upcoming events:

Terra Nova: This is the new name of our SAT’s. We will be taking a practice TerraNova test on Tuesday, April 3rd. Our actual testing will begin after Easter break. We will have 4 days of testing beginning April 17 and ending on Friday, April 20th.

Progress Reports : went home yesterday, please be sure to sign one and return it back to me as soon as possible. Thanks

Last Call : This is the last paper copy you will be recieving in your child’s “Yo! Mom and Dad folder”. From this point on our Friday Frolics will be found via the internet. Bible: This week is Holy Week. We will be having our all school Palm Processional on Monday, viewing the movie Three Trees on Tuesday, and enjoying a Seder Meal on Thursday. Our new Bible verse is Matthew 23:12.

Language Arts: We have selected our topics for our research papers and reviewed selecting and analyzing sources. Three sources are due on Monday, one of which must be a book, professional journal, or article. We will begin outlining and writing our research papers.

Science: The chapter 10 test will be on Wednesday with an after school study session on Tuesday from 3:15 to 3:45.

Math: Your child will be exploring two chapter concepts at the same time: Chapter 8 (ratios and proportions) and chapter 12 (area of shapes). They have learned about area of shapes before, I just want to refresh their memory before we return for our Standardized Testing in April.

History: Chapter 10 concludes. Students will begin a study of Ancient Greece after Easter.

7th Grade News

St. Peter’s seventh grade class exists in order to grow in our Christian values, advance in our education, and improve our socialization skills. We will achieve these goals by following the Laws of the Bible, working hard at our studies, and being supportive of our peers.

March 30^th will be the last day for paper copies of the Friday Letter, unless you request one from me.

Language Arts: We will begin to write our Present Papers next week. Your child will have one computer session to work on this paper. They will need to finish it over Easter break (3-5 pages typed). First draft is due 4/16.

In grammar, we will finish studying conjunctions and interjections. There will be an exam on Thursday.

Math: We are studying geometric shapes and angles. There is a lot of vocabulary in the chapter. Please encourage your child to refer to their notes if they get stuck.

Your child DID/DID NOT complete their Homeconnect Math Facts this week.

Bible: This week, we will finish our study of the books of the Bible. For Friday’s quiz, they must know all 66 books of the Bible. We will practice by singing a song. We are putting the Bullying curriculum on hold next week to study the Easter story.

Latin: We are going to begin an in class project for Latin. We will be translating the Lord’s Prayer into Latin and creating art work to go with it. This trimester, each child needs to complete 9 Latin labs. Your child has completed ____ out of 3 labs. Latin Lab is available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Top of Form NEWS FROM EIGHTH GRADE MARCH 30, 2012

ACADEMIC UPDATE

BIBLE: Students will look at the life and works of Paul as we continue our study of the school theme, Jesus is the Light of the World. Parts will also be assigned for our Seder meal on Thursday, 4/5.

LANGUAGE ARTS: We will continue our work with myths, legends, yarns, and folktales. Most students are making great progress toward reaching their AR goal. Thanks for your help!

HISTORY: Chapter 18 will be a study of Reconstruction. The test on this chapter will be given on Tuesday, 3/27.

LATIN: Students are expected to have 4 tests done by Friday, 3/30.

SCIENCE: 8th grade has finished our Unit on chemical interactions, and will next be heading into Space: The Final Frontier. We will begin by staying close to home as we study our Solar System.

MATH: Algebra begins Chapter 9- Graphing Quadratic Equations. Students will need graph paper.
