Third Grade Curriculum

BIBLE
Our Bible series is Voyages by Concordia Publishing. Bible stories are taught and children memorize scripture verses weekly. Chapel is every Wednesday at 8:40 a.m. Because we are a Christ-centered school, all activities, behaviors, and discussions will be subject to our Christian view. God makes Himself known through math, English, art, music, recess, etc.

MATH
We are using the Scott Foresman California Math series which follows the California state framework. Math facts in a flash by Renaissance Place will be incorporated into our curriculum. Students will practice their math facts at home on the RP website and then test at school.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Houghton Mifflin’s Communities gives an overview of American culture for Social Studies.

LANGUAGE ARTS
The Houghton Mifflin English series sets its focus on teaching grammar skills through student writing. This is an integrated, phonics based approach to reading, organized in thematic clusters, encompassing spelling and English. Book reports (one each trimester) will be assigned in various categories such as biography, mystery, animal stories, and fiction/fantasy. We will explore different methods of book reporting designed to ease the children into the idea of reading for various purposes. Opportunities are given for the development of public speaking skills. Victory Drill (70 w.p.m.) will be used twice a week.

COMPUTER
3rd Grade students will go to the computer lab to learn and practice keyboarding skills.

THIRD GRADE TEACHER

My name is Mary Mitchell. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, with minors in English and Science from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. I have done postgraduate work through Wayne State University, C.S.U. Bakersfield, and the University of San Diego. I hold a Michigan Life Teaching Credential as well as a California Professional Clear and a CLAD credential. I have taught for many years both in private and public schools and look forward to teaching at St. Peter’s again. My husband, Ray, and I have 4 children, 3 grandsons, and 2 granddaughters who all live in CA. We consider them all beautiful gifts from God. Ray and I are members of Capital Christian Church.

My teacher’s aide is Mrs. Theresa Rowley. In addition to teaching 3rd Grade, she will also teach Science as she has in the past. She and her husband attend Harvest Church.

Our Bible theme will be “The Great Commandment” from Mark 12:30-31. We’ll spend this year learning what the Bible says about love. The children will see that the strength of Christians comes from faith, trust, and obedience to the Lord Jesus.

If you have any questions or should need to reach me, the school office number is 689-3050.

Again, welcome.
